The DiveRite Nitek Duo you mention is available from DiveRight Express (their own website) for $289 as a sale. I haven't used the other computers mentioned but I did just purchase a Uwatec Aladin Tec 2g yesterday from LP for less $300 US.

As I progress into the world of technical diving, I find that annoying but not a big deal, I just ignore the NDL.

Even though Suunto software doesn't allow downloading profiles, DiveLog 4.0 does, so it's not an issue. I like it! I got the DSS wrist mount for it. I have been using the Gekko for about 8 months now.

You can get a DSS mount for both types if you prefer bungee straps.Įither one is a good choice for recreational diving and both will serve as a good backup or function in gauge mode if you progress to more tech stuff down the road. I can't remember if it is still called the Gekko or if they changed the name, but it is still basically the same computer.

Suunto has upgraded the Gekko for 2010 and it now can be used with their PC interface so you can download your logbook etc onto your PC. The Gekko has a great strap, nice and long for use over an exposure suit. Getting to know the menus takes a little getting used to, but is fine. The menus are easy to scroll through and you can do limited gas switching. Distributor replaced it both times and the one I have now has been working fine for two years. The first two worked fine until one of the buttons stopped working (same button both times). I am on my third Apeks Quantum in 4 years. Whether or not you need 3 gases is up to you, I don't.īoth Seiko and Suunto use very conservative decompression algorithims, at the oppostite end of the specturm from Pelagic Pressure Systems (Oceanic, Aeris, Sherwood, Genesis) and Cochran. As stated, these are all 2 gas computers.īoth Dive Rite (Nitek Trio) and Zeagle (N2ition 3) now have upgraded 3 gas computers on the market for nominally more than their 2 gas computer (Dive Rite $499, Zeagle $495). All but the Cressi fit in the DSS wrist boot widely available for about $20. I bought a Dive Rite for $280 about a year and a half ago on a price match offer. $280 for the Apeks is a pretty good price, but not likely current. At the Cressi is $260, Dive Rite $445, Tusa $389, and the Zeagle $400. The Apeks Quauntum is not available in the US. The Seiko computer (Dive Rite Nitek Duo, Tusa IQ-700, Cressi Archimedes II, and Zeagle N2ition) are all available in the US.

Should I buy what I need now and save the money to do more diving and upgrade later if I need to (I'd like to get into wreck diving eventually, but we'll see) or should I get something I can grow into a bit, knowing that I may never need the extra stuff? If the cost was the same, I'd go for the Quantum (or other likeness) over the Gekko, but my LDS has the Gekko at around $290 (canadian) while the Nitek Duo is about $540 (they don't have a price on their website for the quantum, but it's probably about the same), and another lds has the IQ-700 for $480, and the archimedes II for $500.

The Quantum (which is available in Canada) seems to have everything the Gekko has, plus a bit more (2 gas, gauge mode.). The Gekko seems to have everything I'd need now. I'll bump this up because I'm looking at the Gekko and the Quantum/Nitek Duo/. When answering, please consider my addition to the question as well as the OP's (though I doubt they'll still be reading it, but who knows), because I know some people read the OP only before replying. EDIT: I was doing a search and found this thread, unreplied to for 9 months, and it basically asked the question I was wondering about, but had no answer to it.
